God is Near the Brokenhearted

Updated: Nov 10, 2021

“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite

spirit.” Psalm 34:18 KJV

In our lifetime, we all will experience unfortunate situations or devastating circumstances that will leave us brokenhearted—with our faith tested and shaken. If you have ever experienced heartbreak of any kind, for any given reason, then you understand the pain of feeling like your heart has been ripped out of your chest and shattered into a million pieces. Whether it is from the death of a loved one, a divorce, feeling abandoned, facing a life-threatening illness, or the loss of an unborn child. The physical, emotional, and mental pain, along with the grief can be overwhelming. It is a difficult process, and we find ourselves wrestling with our flesh and with our emotions…...wondering why or how could God allow this to happen.…...wondering where or who to turn to…...feeling hopeless, helpless, lost, confused, and alone…...like no one cares or understands what you are going through.

Honestly, when we face heartache sometimes it is hard to see beyond our pain or our tears — to think rationally or be spiritually minded. When you find yourself in that familiar place—Remember that God is near. He knows and understands what we are going through. Keep your eyes on God and do not let the enemy cloud your thoughts and pull you into a state of depression. Remember that the devil is a liar and a great deceiver. And as difficult as things may seem, God is still there, and we can find comfort in His arms. He sees our brokenness and He cares about the conditions of our hearts. God is there during our loss, pain, and our suffering.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 KJV

We were not promised to live in this world free from harm, disappointment, pain, heartache, or trouble. And being the “strongest and most righteous” believer in Christ does not exempt us from facing hardship. Life happens….

I am reminded of the story of Job. He lost EVERYTHING that he loved and that he owned. He experienced tremendous heartbreak, with the death of his children, financial loss, sickness, and disease, yet he still held on to God and never wavered in his faith. This experience would be enough to break the average person, but he persevered and in due season, God gave him a double portion of everything he lost.

“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18 KJV

The outcome sometimes doesn’t always turn out the way we may have hoped or prayed for, but that doesn’t mean that we should give up, stop trusting, or stop believing, because God is still in control. We must learn how to seek Him in the midst of the pain, difficulty, disappointment, loss, tragedy, loneliness, sickness, or whatever hard times, we may be facing. It is in those challenging times that we must lean on and cling to Him the most. It is during those trying times that we learn more about who we are and who God is. I am personally learning that it is during our trials that God is deepening our humility, establishing growth and maturity, and increasing our patience and understanding --- but most importantly, He is teaching us how to Truly Walk By Faith.

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; casting all your care upon him; for He careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:7-8 KJV

If you are going through a season of heartbreak, I just want to encourage you, as I encourage myself. Allow yourself time, space, and grace to move forward— to pick up the pieces, and to heal from the brokenness that you feel. Give yourself permission to grieve and do not allow anyone to minimize your pain. Believe and know that you will have joy and peace in your heart again. Finding guidance, strength, encouragement, hope, and healing in the Word of God. Remember, He’s not only close to us when times are good, but He is there when everything around us seems like it is falling apart. Continue to hold onto God. Even though it may not look like it or feel like it but trust that God has a plan, and He is turning things around for you and in your favor. Stay in Faith!
